Exact results are a key component for understanding any physical theory. Unfortunately in the context of quantum field theory (QFT) they are in general impossible to obtain, and we need some sort of approximations. However there exists certain non-realistic theories rich in exactly computable quantities, and from those exact quantities we can infer various theoretical implications for realistic quantum field theories. Supersymmetric gauge theories stand out among these non-realistic theories as the best compromise between the contradicting requirements of realism and exact computability. This thesis consists of three projects, in which we explore some exact results in supersymmetric quantum field theory. In the first project we define and describe irregular vertex operators in the H_3^+ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. Irregular vertex operators are a QFT-equivalent of irregular singular points in the theory of differential equations, and their study is motivated by a relation to the partition functions of some asymptotically free four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories. The definition is shown to be compatible with previously defined irregular vertex operators in Liouville theory through a known duality between the H_3^+ and Liouville theories. In the second project we use supersymmetric localization to compute the partition function of N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories on a four-sphere in the presence of a surface defect on a two-sphere subspace, taking the form of a two-dimensional gauged linear sigma model. The result generalizes the known results for separate supersymmetric gauge theories on the separate spaces. We obtain a partition function in the form of a standard partition function on S^4, with a modified instanton partition function and an additional insertion corresponding to a shifted version of the S^2 partition function. In the third project we develop a new method for finding the ground states of fermions in the presence of BPS monopoles. We use it to find the ground states in the case of Abelian BPS monopoles in R^3, which were previously unknown.

This book reviews a number of spectacular advances that have been made in the study of supersymmetric quantum field theories in the last few years. Highlights include exact calculations of Wilson loop expectation values, and highly nontrivial quantitative checks of the long-standing electric-magnetic duality conjectures The book starts with an introductory article presenting a survey of recent advances, aimed at a wide audience with a background and interest in theoretical physics. The following articles are written for advanced students and researchers in quantum field theory, string theory and mathematical physics, our goal being to familiarize these readers with the forefront of current research. The topics covered include recent advances in the classification and vacuum structure of large families of N=2 supersymmetric field theories, followed by an extensive discussion of the localisation method, one of the most powerful tools for exact studies of supersymmetric field theories. The quantities that have been studied in this way are partition functions, expectation values of line operators, and supersymmetric indices. The book also reviews recently discovered connections between SUSY field theories in four dimensions and two-dimensional conformal field theory. These connections have a counterpart in relations between three-dimensional gauge theories and Chern-Simons theory; the book’s closing chapters explore connections with string theory.

This thesis explores aspects of gravity and quantum field theory (QFT). The first part is devoted to the interplay between manifest T-duality symmetry and higher-derivative corrections to the low-energy effective action of string theory. The second part focuses on exact results in supersymmetric gauge theories. We first discuss T-duality symmetry of string theory from various perspectives. We next review the manifest-duality-symmetric formulation of low-energy effective actions: double field theory (DFT) and its higher-derivative generalization, HSZ (Hohm-Siegel-Zwiebach) theory. We then compute on-shell three-point amplitudes in the HSZ theory. We show that these amplitudes factorize, as in bosonic and heterotic string theories, but they differ from both. Further, we analyze degrees of freedom in the HSZ theory. The spectrum of the theory contains massive spin-2 ghosts and massive scalars, in addition to massless fields. The massive modes can be integrated out exactly at the quadratic level, leading to an infinite series of higher-derivative corrections. Finally, we give a ghost-free massive extension of linearized DFT, which employs novel mass terms for the dilaton and the graviton. In the second part, we start by reviewing the exact results for partition functions of supersymmetric gauge theories on spheres. Exact results, however, are not available for minimally supersymmetric theories on S4 and S6. Minahan conjectured the form of perturbative partition functions for theories on Sd with eight and sixteen supersymmetries. We show that this form gives the correct one-loop divergences of the flat-space super Yang-Mills (SYM) upon taking the radius of the sphere to infinity. We also prove the conjecture explicitly for theories with eight supersymmetries. Further, we extend our results to theories with four supersymmetries for d

In this thesis we discuss supersymmetric gauge theories, focusing on exact results achieved using methods of integrability. For the larger portion of the thesis we study the N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory in the planar limit, a recurring topic being the Konishi anomalous dimension, which is roughly the analogue for the mass of the proton in quantum chromodynamics. TheN = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is known to be integrable in the planar limit, which opens up a wealth oftechniques one can employ in order to find results in this limit valid at any value of the coupling. We begin with perturbation theory where the integrability of the theory first manifests itself. Here we showcase the first exact result, the so-called slope function, which is the linear small spin expansion coefficient of the generalized Konishi anomalous dimension. We then move on to exact results mainly achieved using the novel quantum spectral curve approach, the method allowing one to find scaling dimensions of operators at arbitrary values of the coupling. As an example we find the second coefficient in the small spin expansion after the slope, which we call the curvature function. This allows us to extract non-trivial information about the Konishi operator. Methods of integrability are also applicable to other supersymmetric gauge theories such as ABJM, which in fact shares many similarities with N = 4 super Yang-Mills. We briefly review these parallel developments in the last chapter of the thesis.

Designed as a sequel to the authors' Introduction to Gauge Field Theory, Supersymmetric Gauge Field Theory and String Theory introduces first-year graduate students to supersymmetric theories, including supergravity and superstring theories. Starting with the necessary background in quantum field theory, the book covers the three key topics of high-energy physics. The emphasis is on practical calculations rather than abstract generalities or phenomenological results. Where possible, the authors show how to calculate, connecting the theoretical with the phenomenological. While the field continues to advance and grow, this book addresses the basic theory at the core and will likely remain relevant even if more advanced ideas change.

This book covers some recent advances in string theory and extra dimensions. Intended mainly for advanced graduate students in theoretical physics, it presents a rare combination of formal and phenomenological topics, based on the annual lectures given at the School of the Theoretical Advanced Study Institute (2001) OCo a traditional event that brings together graduate students in high energy physics for an intensive course of advanced learning. The lecturers in the School are leaders in their fields. The first lecture, by E DOCOHoker and D Freedman, is a systematic introduction to the gaugeOCogravity correspondence, focusing in particular on correlation functions in the conformal case. The second, by L Dolan, provides an introduction to perturbative string theory, including recent advances on backgrounds involving Ramond-Ramond fluxes. The third, by S Gubser, explains some of the basic facts about special holonomy and its uses in string theory and M-theory. The fourth, by J Hewett, surveys the TeV phenomenology of theories with large extra dimensions. The fifth, by G Kane, presents the case for supersymmetry at the weak scale and some of its likely experimental consequences. The sixth, by A Liddle, surveys recent developments in cosmology, particularly with regard to recent measurements of the CMB and constraints on inflation. The seventh, by B Ovrut, presents the basic features of heterotic M-theory, including constructions that contain the Standard Model. The eighth, by K Rajagopal, explains the recent advances in understanding QCD at low temperatures and high densities in terms of color superconductivity. The ninth, by M Sher, summarizes grand unified theories and baryogenesis, including discussions of supersymmetry breaking and the Standard Model Higgs mechanism. The tenth, by M Spiropulu, describes collider physics, from a survey of current and future machines to examples of data analyses relevant to theories beyond the Standard Model. The eleventh, by M Strassler, is an introduction to supersymmetric gauge theory, focusing on Wilsonian renormalization and analogies between three- and four-dimensional theories. The twelfth, by W Taylor and B Zwiebach, introduces string field theory and discusses recent advances in understanding open string tachyon condensation. The thirteenth, by D Waldram, discusses explicit model building in heterotic M-theory, emphasizing the role of the E8 gauge fields. The written presentation of these lectures is detailed yet straightforward, and they will be of use to both students and experienced researchers in high-energy theoretical physics for years to come.
