Excerpt from Elementary Modern Chemistry The beginner in the study of chemistry finds interest and pleasure, first of all, in the remarkable new facts which are placed before him, and this is both natural and desirable. N 0 one can master the science without much study of proper ties and reactions, and minute acquaintance with as many phenomena as possible is a fundamental requisite. Modern chemistry has, however, a number of general laws which appear. Everywhere through it, connecting various facts in the most interesting way. Before study has gone very far it becomes necessary to begin the statement of these laws and to indicate how the facts already learned group them selves about them. Two purposes are served by this method of presentation. First, a real science of chemistry begins to unfold itself to the student, and second, the acquisition of more new facts is made easier and more interesting. We have planned in this book to present a sufficient number of facts and experiments to fill the time usually devoted to a first course, and at the same time we have endeavored to fit these facts, as far as possible, to the Simpler of the general laws now firmly established as the basis of the science of chemistry. Excerpt from Elementary Chemistry The energy aspect of chemistry should not be entirely neglected. Elementary notions of thermo chemistry illustrated by simple reactions should be dwelt upon here and there in the course. Theories should not be considered until after the student has acquired some knowledge of the facts and laws of chemistry. Their presentation should be such as not to fail to give correct notions of their real value and their relation to facts and laws. Excerpt from Modern Chemistry With Its Practical Applications In preparing this book for use in secondary schools, I have endeavored to look at the science from the viewpoint of the students themselves. The fault with many texts upon the same subject is that the position of the learner has been disregarded; the books have been encyclopaaedic; they have presented a great number of facts as a skeleton or framework, but this skeleton has not been clothed with muscle and animated with life. No more fascinating subject finds a place in the curricula of our secondary schools, yet to the average student chemistry is too often but an irksome task. In the present work I have omitted much that is often given in an elementary text, while at the same time entering more into that detail which gives lively interest to the subject. It has been my aim to show, whenever possible, the practical application of the science to the everyday affairs of life; in other words, to emphasize industrial and commercial chemistry. At the same time the fundamental principles of the science have not been forgotten; on the contrary, they have been emphasized even more than is usual in an elementary chemistry. This has been rendered possible by the omission of much that can never be either of interest or of value to the beginner. Recognizing the fact that science must be taught inductively by experiment, some authors have assumed that the student must gain all his knowledge of chemistry in this way. No greater mistake could be made. The science has been hundreds of years in reaching its present development, and much must be accepted by the student without any effort to work it out for himself. Excerpt from Elementary Chemistry A course in elementary chemistry suitable for the average high-school student should give a description of the common elements, their compounds, and their reactions, sufficiently clear and full to enable him to form correct conceptions of the nature of the changes that are going on around him. But it should do more; as far as is possible in an elementary course, it should provide him with a thorough groundwork in the simpler laws and theories of modern chemistry. This gives meaning and coherence to what would otherwise be fragments of knowledge, and lays a solid foundation for the continuation of the study of chemistry. The descriptive matter should impose as little strain as possible on the student's memory. To accomplish this the facts should be properly coordinated with one another and duly correlated with the experiences of everyday life. General points of view should be emphasized and isolated details suppressed. Important historical items should be mentioned, for they put life into the subject and give it perspective. The laws of chemistry should be introduced in immediate connection with the discussion of those substances which first present typical applications of each law. The treatment of the laws should be full and varied. Reference to them should be made frequently throughout the course, so that they may become a permanent working possession of the student. The modern theories of physical chemistry should receive the attention their importance demands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
