This volume concentrates on three topics: mixed analog--digital circuit design, sensor interface circuits and communication circuits. The book comprises six papers on each topic of a tutorial nature aimed at improving the design of analog circuits. The book is divided into three parts. Part I: Mixed Analog--Digital Circuit Design considers the largest growth area in microelectronics. Both standard designs and ASICs have begun integrating analog cells and digital sections on the same chip. The papers cover topics such as groundbounce and supply-line spikes, design methodologies for high-level design and actual mixed analog--digital designs. Part II: Sensor Interface Circuits describes various types of signal conditioning circuits and interfaces for sensors. This book provides an overview of different circuits and systems that can be interfaced with a MEMS resonant micro-gyroscope. Techniques for measuring the rotation rate of the gyroscope based on either amplitude- or phase-shift modulation of its output signal are introduced, along with challenges associated with optimizing the noise performance to achieve navigation-grade levels of sensitivity as the frequency is scaled into the MHz regime. Mathematical models are derived to describe the operation of the sensor and used to generate equivalent electrical circuit models of the gyroscope. An IC design strategy is then outlined and implemented to optimize the drive loop and sense channel for power and noise, and steps toward reducing this noise as the system is pushed to navigation-grade performance are presented that maintain optimum system power consumption. DC charge pump design is also examined, and strategies that can be used to generate larger polarization voltages on the ASIC are presented. The material discussed in this book can also be applied to other resonant devices, such as low-frequency gyroscopes and RF resonators.

Analog CMOS Microelectronic Circuits describes novel approaches for analog electronic interfaces design, especially for resistive and capacitive sensors showing a wide variation range, with the intent to cover a lack of solutions in the literature. The objective of this project has been to implement the analog interface circuitry of the UMSI chip for the Environmental Monitoring Microsystem. This circuitry provides the readout for capacitive sensors, a resistive sensor, and interface for sensors with direct voltage output. The analog interface circuit block is highly programmable and provides offset and gain adjustments. It also supports self-test for physical capacitive sensors. This report describes the general architecture and detailed description of the design. Also simulated performance of the circuit is presented.
