Whether the residents planned just to spend winters in Wilton Manors or the rest of their lives, it was no matter to E.J. "Ned" Willingham, a Georgian with a grandiose plan for the piny scrublands just outside the growing city of Fort Lauderdale. Willingham was rare among land speculators during the "Florida Frenzy"--a scrupulously honest man. He named this development, his favorite, Wilton Manors. Willingham envisioned a graceful community of modest homes on large yards, with schools, a hotel, and small parks dotting the exclusive, whites-only enclave. Almost 80 years later, Willingham's little community lives on, but not in the fashion he might have expected. His all-white community has grown and matured into a pleasantly diverse and uncommonly tolerant place with lovely homes, outstanding city services, and an eye on preserving its genteel history.

The Seminoles once roamed the land that encompasses Wilton Manors, until Henry Flagler brought his East Coast Railway through the untamed wilderness in the late nineteenth century. By 1910, the railway had transformed the area into a viable farming and shipping hamlet known as Colohatchee, until a wealthy businessman began marketing the plot of land nestled between the North and South branches of the Middle River as a beautiful bedroom suburb of Fort Lauderdale. The 1926 housing market crash in south Florida, paired with a devastating hurricane brought an end to this dream one that wouldn't be revived until after WWII. Join local author Ben Little and the Wilton Manors Historical Society as they chronicle the history of this incredible town, from its humble roots to the thriving urban community it is today.

Wilton Manor Five years have passed since Michael Grace left New York City a divorced and disgraced NYPD Detective. Still struggling to find peace in his life as well as a consistent relationship with his two young children, Grace spends his nights running one of Wilton Manors most popular gay bars and his days nursing a hefty hangover. After the suicide of friend and local prominent realtor, Vincent Masonius, Michael is asked by his friend's brother to investigate the circumstances surrounding Vincent's suicide. He reluctantly agrees and his former detective instincts lead him all the way to the steps of the Florida Governor's mansion. Armed with the knowledge of a gay affair between the Governor and his dead friend, Michael soon finds himself in the cross-hairs of powerful politicians, corrupt attorneys and a group of Russian Oligarchs seeking to silence him as they attempt to siphon off billions of dollars of crude oil from the protected acreage of the Everglades. Juggling between his unremitting ex-wife, his inconsistent role as a reliable parent and his promise to Vincent's brother, Michael hopes to remain alive long enough to expose the clandestine plot and prove to his children and detractors that he is worthy of their love and most importantly...their forgiveness. What makes the book special: It seems few publishers are successfully addressing modern family dynamics through the context of sparse, tightly written dark fiction complete with an appealing yet flawed protagonist. Wilton Manors is a dark tale about ruthless closeted politicians, American's naivete.

In 2022, Wilton Art(R) partnered with acclaimed photographer and Wilton Manors resident Sharron Demarest to create a bold, yet intimate, photographic montage of individuals who enrich the Wilton Manors community. wiltonproud.2022 presented photographic portraits of the diverse individuals that make up our city-those that live, work, eat and play in Wilton Manors. Their day-to-day lives may not intersect at first glance, but each is deeply woven into the fabric of City, creating a vivid tapestry of an inclusive, proud, and flourishing community. wiltonproud.2022 featured portraits of these individuals placed on posters throughout the city and each poster shared their unique "I am proud..." statement as well. A central City Hall installation anchored the project with large format posters on the front windows. Nearly 100 other posters were installed in business windows. The installation ran through June 2022 to coincide with the celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride Month. It reinforced that being proud has no boundaries, encouraged all to embrace pride together, and to listen and see the pride that makes up Wilton Manors. Now, we present that same project to you in book form, so you can take it home to be enjoyed over and over again from the comfort of your favorite reading chair.
