A diary, in which records of all events of importance were entered, was commenced by Mr. Van ltiebeek when he embarked at Amsterdam, and was cmntinued with only a break of an occasional day until 1808. The occurrences of each year originally formed a volume of three or four hundred pages of foolscap. By some leans between 1806 and 1830 a large proportion of these volumes disappeared from the Cape archives. For tunately. There were duplicates of most of them in the arehlvea of the Netherlands, of which copies have been preeured by the Cape government. The journal is now complete to 1788, except for the years 1675, 1688, and 1001. From 1788 to 1795 it is missing, except for 1794.
