Download The Quest for Security in the Caribbean Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
This comprehensive work on security in the English-speaking Caribbean, offers a wealth of information about the history, politics, economics and geography of the entire region. The author examines security problems in the region as a geopolitical unit, not on a selective case-study basis, as is usually done. He assesses Caribbean security within a theoretical framework where four factors are critical: perceptions of the political elites; capabilities of the states; the geopolitics of the area; and the ideological orientations of the parties in power. Political and economic issues are judged to be as relevant to security as military factors. The author identifies safeguards which countries in the region may take in the coming decade.

Health issues in the Caribbean analyses and offers direction for public health practice in the twenty-first century. Download The Handbook on Caribbean Education Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
This book brings together leading scholars of Caribbean education from around the world. Schooling continues to hold a special place both as a means to achieve social mobility and as a mechanism for supporting the economy of Caribbean nations. In this book, the Caribbean includes the Greater and Lesser Antilles. The Greater Antilles is made up of the five larger islands (and six countries) of the northern Caribbean, including the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Puerto Rico, and Jamaica. The Lesser Antilles includes the Windward and Leeward Islands which are inclusive of Barbados, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago along with several other islands. Each chapter provides a unique perspective on the various social and cultural issues that define Caribbean education and schooling. The Handbook on Caribbean Education fills a void in the literature and documents the important research being done throughout the Caribbean. Creating a space where Caribbean voices are a part of “international” discussions about 21st century global matters and concerns is an important contribution of this work.

Download The Public Sector in the Caribbean Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
May 1996 The public sector's performance in the Caribbean varies, in reducing poverty and in creating an enabling environment for growth. Barbados and the Bahamas have been the high performers, Guyana and the Dominican Republic have been sluggish, and the other Caribbean countries fall in between. In the Caribbean region, the public sector is now the predominant provider of tertiary education and health services (university education and hospital-based curative care), which mainly benefit the nonpoor. Attempts must be made to recover costs from high-income users and use that revenue to improve the quality and quantity (as appropriate) of basic services. Lessons from experience suggest that most Caribbean countries need to encourage the private sector to participate more in providing infrastructure and need to provide a better regulatory framework. The good news: this is already taking place in many countries.

The Contemporary Caribbean: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities explores a number of contemporary issues facing the Caribbean, which will be of broad interest to a regional and global audience. The book will be of interest to a wide and diverse global audience interested in the Caribbean and small island developing states, including: university professors; researchers and scholars; university students; agricultural scientists and practitioners; agricultural policy-makers. This book is important in adding to the slowly expanding literature on the Caribbean. The perspectives they share are thus considered and evidenced-based, framed by their extensive knowledge of the regional context, and argued with regional nuance. It is hoped that readers will find this book insightful, and interesting. Two assessments by Caribbean scholars underscore the value of this volume at this time.
