Metallurgical examination, including Brinell hardness determinations, macroetch tests, fracture tests for steel soundness and response to heat treatment, and microscopic examination, was conducted on each of fourteen (14) 3/8 in. homogeneous armor plates furnished by Great Lakes Steel Corporation and tested at The Ordnance Research Center as a part of the effect of hardness program. Steel soundness, with respect to freedom from laminations, was satisfactory in all plates except one. All plates had been satisfactory heat treated as indicated by the fibre test and microscopic examination.

A metallurgical examination was conducted on two 3/8 inch experimental face hardened plates which were prepared by the Buick Motors Division of the General Motors Corporation under NRC Project 30. The plates were made from a low alloy rolled steel 94T20, which was gas carburized. The samples examined were of good quality rolled armor heat treated so as to have a high face hardness (700 BHN), high core hardness (444 BHN), and superior toughness in the core. These plates differed from four examined previously (Watertown Arsenal Laboratory Memorandum Report No. WAL 710/631) in that plate 600 was carburized more deeply and plate 601 less than in the previous plates.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the difference in metallurgical properties of a homogeneous plate and a carburized plate, each 2 inch thick and rolled from the same experimental heat. The carburized plate failed on ballistic testing because of a large back spall approximately 6 in x 7 in size. In addition, the ballistic limit of the ductile homogeneous plate was 68 ft/sec higher than the carburized plate. Lt. Col. S.B. Ritchie, who witnesses the ballistic testing of these plates at Aberdeen Proving Ground, suggested that they be sent to Watertown Arsenal for metallurgical examination. The representative of Henry Disston & Sons, Inc. (manufactures of the plate) concurring with this suggestion, forwarded 12 in x 12 in sections cut from each of the plates to Watertown Arsenal for study.

This 1944 report discusses a metallurgical examination, including fracture tests for steel soundness and response to heat treatment, Brinell hardness tests, macroetch tests and microscopic examination, which was conducted on sections from six 1 inch thick homogeneous plates. Steel soundness was satisfactory on all but one plate. Poor shock properties, as denoted by crystalline fractures, were observed on all plates at hardnesses above 340 Brinell.

The object of this study was to determine by a series of preliminary heat treatments whether a satisfactory hard case may be obtained on the surface of a 1.4-in. thick cast armor in conjunction with a sorbitic or tempered martensitic core at an approximate hardness of 270 Brinell and, if successful, to study further the ballistic possibilities of such a material. The rsults of this preliminary investigation indicative that this process of casting face hardened armor plate is not practical.

Metallurgical examination of 18 pieces of armor plate 25/64-in x 2-in x 8-in cur from heat SCN219-1, rolled by Ford Motor Company and heat treated by Standard Steel Spring Company has been completed. This material spalled badly when tested with cal. .50APM2 ammunition under requirements of AXS-495. The results of this investigation indicae that spalling was due to the presence of segregations of elongated silicate nonmetallic inclusions in the material. This condition was revealed by the torsion test, microscopic examination, and also by 'woodiness' in the fracture test for steel soundness. A woody condition in rolled armor is indicative of poor quality plate and therefore is not desirable in food quality plate.
