Objective structured clinical exams (OSCEs) have been in use as an assessment tool for graduate medical students and postgraduate medical training all around the world, in anesthesia training in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, and even in the United States, where medical schools have been using OSCE for a long time. When the OSCEs were introduced as a formal assessment tool for the certification of anesthesia trainees in the United States, it was adopted in a way that was slightly different than the classic way of using OSCEs in other countries. One of the differences was in the limitation of the OSCE to examine only nine skills, six of which are communication and professionalism skills and three of which are for interpretation skills, although the focus of the American OSCE is on communication and professionalism. However, it did not ignore the interpretation skills, with at least two stations on the real exam dedicated to the interpretation skills. The general theme of this book is that it utilizes some adult learning techniques to fuel an interactive learning experience for the candidates, so that they can work together on building their skills and preparing for the OSCE component of their assessment. The authors worked carefully on creating a manuscript that can be used by the practicing examiner/standardized patient to guide the process of mock OSCE encounters in a fruitful, educative and enjoyable manner.

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) assesses key practical aspects of anaesthetic competence and forms a key part of the Primary examination of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. In the examination, the candidate moves through a series of stations which test clinical assessment, data interpretation, communication, and technical skills. This book helps the trainee to practise the examination. In the wider context, it will also help the anaesthetist to develop essential practical skills, such as history taking and communication, which are an invaluable part of day to day anaesthetic practice. This new edition of the book has been expanded and updated to reflect recent changes to the OSCE examination.

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a highly reliable and valid tool for the evaluation of trainees in anaesthesia. It enables examiners and trainers to assess a number of competencies in an organised way. Performance in the OSCE is considered to be a fair reflection of the level of knowledge and skill attained during anaesthesia training. Apart from having a wide and deep knowledge on the subject, trainees are expected to have the capacity to demonstrate their competency in a short period of time allotted for each station. The authors of this book have a rich experience in successfully conducting OSCE courses in the United Kingdom. The sample OSCE sets in the book closely simulate the style and content of the Royal College of Anaesthetists' examination format. The book contains 100 OSCE stations with answers based on key practical procedures, clinical skills, communication skills, data interpretation, anaesthetic equipment and the management of critical incidents on a simulator. This book will also help candidates all over the world to pass highly competitive postgraduate examinations in anaesthesia. It is an invaluable educational resource for all anaesthetists.

Key Notes for Anesthesia Oral Board and OSCE is an updated book for board eligible anesthesiologists to prepare for anesthesia oral board. It includes the newest content outline for the objective structured clinical examination including ultrasound and echo images. Unlike the written board in which the examinees can have vague knowledge to be able to pick up the right answers, in the oral board the examinees must have well organized and clear-cut knowledge to be able to speak it out. In addition, the answers in oral board need to be short and right to the point. As a result, the knowledge base for oral board has to be concise and precise. To fulfill this goal, the Key Notes contains only key facts of all major clinical anesthesia scenarios, and it is organized in clinically related categories or systems in such ways that it is easy to remember and easy to speak out. It also contains the most recent ASA guidelines. In addition to oral board preparation, this book can also be used as a quick clinical reference book for daily anesthesia practice.
