Download Fulani Hegemony in Yola (Old Adamawa) 1809-1902 Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
Following the launching of jihad against Sarkin Gobir and other Hausa chiefs by Uthman dan Fodio, a renowned Muslim reformer, Yola became one of the focal points for Uthman's Movement south of the Lake Chad region. The leader was Modibbo Adama (1809-1847) and the emirate he formed was called Adamawa. The study analyses the factors which came into play in the creation and maintenance of the emirate out of a vast array of segmented units of authority. By the middle of the 19th century, Europeans started visiting the region in a general drive to abolish slave trade from its sources and substitute it with legitimate trade. Not contented with mere trade, European expeditions competed with one another to colonize the region for their respective governments. Lamido Zubeiru (1890-1901) refused to submit, but the British, French and Germans through European diplomatic channels partitioned the emirate in 1893 and 1894. The threat of Mahdism and the consolidation of Rabeh's power over Bornu and neighbouring kingdoms provided the Europeans additional reasons for waging war against the emirate and to overthrow almost a century of Fulani hegemony. The principal sources are oral tradition preserved in local chronicles and contemporary reports of European travellers, soldiers, administrators and Royal Niger Company officials.

Download Education Under Colonial Rule Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
In this comprehensive work, James P. Hubbard provides an in depth examination of education in Nigeria under British colonial rule, placing it in its broader social and political context. He focuses on one of the most advanced schools in the Northern Provinces, Katsina College. Using information from government archives, he explores the major factors and government policies that shaped the College and colonial education in general. He reveals how colonial educators implemented these policies as well as African reactions to the educational system. Details concerning the kinds of subjects that were taught and characteristics of the student body are also included. Relevant for scholars of African history, this book provides new insights on the sociopolitical dynamics surrounding colonialism and the educational system that ultimately supported it.

Download Constructing the Kwanja of Adamawa (Cameroon) Book in PDF, Epub and Kindle
The Kwanja are a small ethnic group of 10,000 people living in Adamawa, Cameroon. The present monograph describes their bilineal kinship system, political structures, oral history, moral economy, rituals, cosmologies and world view. The book discusses the way the Kwanja construct themselves as homogenous despite their astonishing cultural diversity (one can distinguish at least nine different groups speaking different languages and having a great variety of rituals), and how they construct themselves as different from their neighbours despite the cultural traits that they share in common. As the Fulbe dominate Adamawa economically and politically, the impact that they have on the construction of Kwanja society and identity is given prominent attention.
